Where it comes from
The horoscope grew out of Babylonian sky-watching in the second millennium BC, where priests kept records of planetary positions and tied them to events in the kingdom. Greek astronomers of the Hellenistic period turned those records into a personal system: the zodiac was divided into twelve equal signs of thirty degrees each, and a person's character was read from the sky at the hour of their birth. Ptolemy set the method down in the Tetrabiblos in the second century AD, and that text carried the practice through the Islamic Golden Age into medieval Europe.
