Where it comes from
The draconic chart is a twentieth-century technique, developed in British astrology from the 1970s onward, particularly by Pamela Crane. Its starting point is the lunar nodal axis, which traditional astrology has always read as the karmic spine of a chart, and its move is to rebuild the whole chart around it — to see what the planets look like when measured from the node rather than from the vernal point.
How the method works
The north node is set to 0° Aries and every other body is shifted by the same amount. If the node sits at 15° Taurus, forty-five degrees are subtracted from everything. The aspects between planets are unchanged — the whole chart moves rigidly — but every sign and house placement changes, which is the point. A Sun in Capricorn can become a draconic Sun in Leo, and that second Sun is read as what the person is underneath the chart they actually live. The reading that carries most weight is resonance: where a draconic planet lands on or near its own natal position, or on a natal planet, the two layers agree, and that agreement is read as an energy that is already consciously integrated rather than in conflict with itself.

Common questions
- Do the aspects change?
- No. The whole chart is rotated by one amount, so the angular distances between planets are identical. Only the signs, degrees and houses change.
- Which chart is the real one?
- The natal chart describes the life as lived; the draconic is read as a second layer beneath it, not as a correction. Neither replaces the other and the technique is only useful when both are read.
- Do I need an exact birth time?
- For the planets, no — the shift depends on the node, which moves slowly. For the draconic Ascendant and houses, yes, as with any chart.
