Where it comes from
Greek had two words for time. Chronos is time that is counted — hours, dates, duration. Kairos is the right moment for something, the opening that is there and then is not. Kairos was depicted as a youth with a long forelock and a bald back of the head: you can catch him as he comes but not once he has passed. The idea that actions have proper moments runs through much older practice too — electional astrology, the branch concerned with choosing a time to begin something, is documented from the Hellenistic period onward and was standard court practice in medieval Europe and the Islamic world.
How the method works
Electional timing works backwards from the kind of action. A beginning is judged by the condition of the chart at that moment: the Moon is the main significator, and a Moon making no aspects before it changes sign is traditionally read as an empty period where nothing takes hold. Mercury retrograde is avoided for contracts, Mars aspects for anything requiring patience. The method does not claim a good moment guarantees a good outcome; it claims some moments carry more friction than others.
