Where it comes from
Vimshottari is the dasha system of the Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra and the one that Indian astrology settled on out of dozens of competing period schemes. The name means one hundred and twenty — the total length of the cycle in years, taken as a symbolic full human span. It has been the standard predictive framework of the tradition for well over a thousand years.
How the method works
The cycle runs through nine planets in a fixed order — Ketu, Venus, Sun, Moon, Mars, Rahu, Jupiter, Saturn, Mercury — with fixed lengths from six years for the Sun to twenty for Venus. Where you enter the cycle, and how much of the first period is already spent at birth, is set by the exact position of the Moon inside its nakshatra: the ruler of that star is your first mahadasha, and the fraction of the star already traversed is the fraction of that period already gone. Each mahadasha is subdivided into nine antardashas in the same order and proportions, and those again into pratyantardashas, so the system can be read at whatever resolution the question needs.

Common questions
- Why do my dasha dates differ from another calculation?
- Nearly always the ayanamsa. A different sidereal offset moves the Moon slightly, which moves the fraction of the first nakshatra, which shifts every date in the timeline. This reading uses Lahiri.
- Is a Saturn or Rahu period automatically bad?
- The tradition does not read it that way. What a period delivers is taken from how that planet sits in the chart — its house, sign and condition — not from the planet's general reputation.
- Do I need an exact birth time?
- Yes, more than for most Vedic techniques. A few minutes of error moves the Moon's degree and can shift the whole timeline by months.
