Geomancy is the ancient Arabic divinatory technique using 16 figures — each a unique binary combination of four elemental lines (fire, air, water, earth). Each line is active (one dot) or passive (two dots), yielding 2⁴ = 16 possible figures. The server randomly generates figures for the chosen spread: Oracle (1 figure), Past-Present-Future (3 figures) or Geomantic Cross (5 figures). Each figure has a planetary ruler, zodiac sign and classical interpretation. The interpretation covers the combination in the context of spread positions according to medieval and Renaissance tradition.
Where it comes from
Geomancy began as ilm al-raml, the science of the sand, in the medieval Islamic world, where a diviner marked rows of dots in sand and counted them. It passed into Latin Europe in the twelfth century through translations from Arabic and became one of the most widely practised divinatory arts of the Middle Ages and Renaissance, with Agrippa, Robert Fludd and John Heydon all writing on it. It is a binary system centuries older than any other in Europe.
How the method works
Each figure is four lines, and each line is either single or double — one dot or two. Four binary lines give exactly sixteen figures, no more, and the four lines correspond to fire, air, water and earth in descending order, so a figure is also a statement about which elements are active in a matter. Every figure has a name, a planetary ruler and a zodiacal attribution: Fortuna Major and Fortuna Minor for greater and lesser success, Via for movement and change, Populus for a crowd and for passivity, Carcer for enclosure, Laetitia for gladness. The classical method builds sixteen figures from four Mothers by strict derivation; the simplified spreads used here draw the figures directly and read them in position — one for a direct answer, three for the development of a matter, five in a cross for the fuller picture.

Common questions
- Why are there exactly sixteen figures?
- Because four lines with two states each give two to the fourth power. The number is a consequence of the structure, not a choice.
- Does geomancy have anything to do with feng shui?
- No, despite the shared English name. Feng shui is a Chinese system about the arrangement of space; this is an Arabic and European divinatory technique with a different history entirely.
- Is Populus a bad figure?
- It is read as neutral and empty — a crowd, no movement of its own. In an outcome position it usually means the matter will do whatever the surrounding figures push it to do.
