Zi Wei Dou Shu (紫微斗數) — Purple Star Astrology — is one of the most sophisticated Chinese astrology systems, developed during the Song Dynasty over 1,000 years ago. Unlike Ba Zi which uses the solar calendar, Zi Wei Dou Shu is a strictly lunar system. From date, time and gender : 12 palaces (Life, Siblings, Spouse, Children, Wealth, Health, Travel, Friends, Career, Property, Fortune, Parents), positions of all 14 major stars, Five Element Type (Water 2, Wood 3, Metal 4, Earth 5, Fire 6) and Four Transformations (Hua Lu, Hua Quan, Hua Ke, Hua Ji). The interpretation covers key palaces, transformations and the overall destiny map.
Where it comes from
Zi Wei Dou Shu takes its name from the Purple Star, the pole star, around which the Chinese sky was understood to turn. The system is traditionally credited to Chen Tuan, a Daoist of the tenth century, and was developed under the Song. It stood alongside Ba Zi as one of the two main branches of Chinese destiny analysis, and the difference between them is fundamental: Ba Zi works with elements on the solar calendar, Zi Wei with stars placed on the lunar one.
How the method works
A grid of twelve palaces is laid out, each covering one domain: life, siblings, spouse, children, wealth, health, travel, friends, career, property, fortune and parents. Into this grid fourteen major stars are placed, with a large number of minor ones, according to the lunar date and hour of birth and the Five Element Type — Water 2, Wood 3, Metal 4, Earth 5, Fire 6 — derived from the year stem and branch. Each star has a character, and its meaning comes from which palace it lands in: an ambitious star in the wealth palace says something different from the same star in the spouse palace. Four Transformations are then applied, driven by the year stem: Hua Lu adds prosperity, Hua Quan authority, Hua Ke reputation, Hua Ji obstruction. Those four are what most readings turn on, because they tell you which palaces the life actually pushes on.

Common questions
- Do I need the lunar date of my birth?
- You give the ordinary calendar date and the conversion is done for you. The system is lunar internally, which is why the same solar date in different years gives quite different charts.
- How exact does the birth hour need to be?
- Chinese hours are two hours long, so you need to be sure which of the twelve you fall in. Near a boundary the whole chart shifts, so an uncertain time is a real problem here.
- Is this better than Ba Zi?
- They answer differently. Ba Zi gives a picture of elemental balance and is strong on temperament and timing; Zi Wei gives a domain-by-domain map. Practitioners who use both do not treat either as a substitute.
