The Personal Year is a numerological forecasting system based on a 9-year cycle. It is calculated by adding the digits of your birth day and month to the digits of the current calendar year, then reducing to a single digit (1–9) while preserving master numbers 11 and 22. Each personal year carries a distinctive theme and energy: Year 1 brings new beginnings, Year 4 brings building and effort, Year 9 brings cycle completion. Along with the personal year, your Life Path number is also calculated as the permanent context of the forecast.

Where it comes from

The personal year is part of the same twentieth-century Western numerology that produced the life path and destiny numbers. It divides life into repeating cycles of nine years, each with its own character, and is the system's main timing device — the equivalent of what transits do in astrology.

How the method works

The calculation adds the day and month of birth to the current year and reduces to a single digit. A one year is read for beginnings and for planting; two for patience, partnership and waiting; three for expression and visibility; four for work, structure and consolidation; five for change, movement and disruption; six for home, responsibility and obligation; seven for withdrawal, study and reassessment; eight for material return and authority; nine for endings and for clearing out. The cycle then begins again. Some practitioners date the change from the birthday, others from January, and the two give different answers for part of the year.

A reading gives your current personal year number and what it indicates, where you are within the nine-year cycle, what the year is traditionally suited to and what it resists, and the years on either side for context.

Common questions

Does it start on my birthday or in January?: Both conventions are in use. The birthday version is more common in older sources; the January version is easier to work with and is what most calculators assume.
Is a nine year bad?: It is read as a year of completion rather than of loss, and the framework treats what ends in a nine year as what was already finished. Whether that is bad depends on what it is.
Does it fit with the personal month?: Yes, they are used together. The personal month is calculated from the personal year and refines the timing within it.
