Where it comes from
The soul contract is a modern framing of an older numerological practice. The seven numbers it uses — life path, expression, soul urge, personality, birthday, maturity, and the karmic lessons and debts — are the standard set of Western numerology as it was codified in the twentieth century. What is new is the framing: reading them together as terms agreed before birth rather than as a personality description.
How the method works
The date of birth gives the life path, read as the central direction, and the day alone gives the birthday number, read as a specific given talent. The full name at birth gives three more: every letter for the expression number, the vowels for the soul urge, the consonants for the personality. The maturity number is the life path and expression added, and is read as what the two resolve into in the second half of life. Two further readings come from absence and from particular totals. Karmic lessons are the digits from one to nine that never appear in the name at all — read as capacities that have to be developed rather than ones that are given. Karmic debts are the totals thirteen, fourteen, sixteen and nineteen appearing before reduction, each with a specific traditional meaning.
