Your hologenetic profile is calculated from the positions of the Sun and Earth at the moment of your birth and 88 days before. The four spheres of the Activation Sequence describe your transformation path: Life's Work (conscious Sun) — what you bring to the world; Evolution (conscious Earth) — where tension grows; Radiance (unconscious Sun) — your physical vitality; Purpose (unconscious Earth) — your deeper inner anchor. Each sphere has a triple frequency: Shadow, Gift and Siddhi.
Where it comes from
Gene Keys was created by Richard Rudd and published in 2009. It is a direct offshoot of Human Design — Rudd studied with Ra Uru Hu — and uses the same underlying calculation, mapping the sixty-four I Ching hexagrams onto positions derived from a birth chart. Where it differs is in the interpretation: each of the sixty-four keys is given three levels, called shadow, gift and siddhi, describing the same material at three degrees of development. It is a recent system, under twenty years old.
How the method works
A profile is calculated from birth date, time and place, producing eleven positions grouped into sequences. The first four form the Activation Sequence and are described as the core genius; another group forms the Venus Sequence, concerned with relationships; a third the Pearl Sequence, concerned with work and money. Each position carries one of the sixty-four keys, and each key is contemplated at its three levels: the shadow as the reactive pattern, the gift as the same energy in use, the siddhi as its fullest expression. The system is presented as something to sit with over years rather than to read once.

Common questions
- Is it the same as Human Design?
- It uses the same calculation and the same sixty-four hexagrams but a different interpretive frame. Human Design gives types and decision strategies; Gene Keys gives a contemplative sequence.
- Do I need an exact birth time?
- Yes. The positions shift quickly and an inaccurate time changes the keys.
- Is the shadow the bad version?
- The system frames all three levels as the same energy at different pressures rather than as good and bad. The shadow is described as the gift under stress.
