The Medicine Wheel is an ancient spiritual system originating with the indigenous peoples of North America, popularized through Sun Bear's Earth Astrology (1980). Based on your date of birth, your Birth Totem is determined — the animal that rules the period of your birth and carries specific wisdom, instinct and life energy. Each totem belongs to one of four Elemental Clans (Frog/water, Turtle/earth, Hawk/fire, Butterfly/air) that describe the foundation of your character. Additionally, the Spirit Keeper is determined — the guardian watching over your compass direction (North, South, East, West) with a specific spiritual lesson. Where it comes from
Medicine wheels are real stone structures on the northern plains of North America, some of them thousands of years old, and the wheel as a symbol of the four directions is central to a number of indigenous traditions. The birth-totem calendar sold as Earth astrology is not: it was assembled by Sun Bear and published in 1980, drawing on indigenous imagery but arranged as a twelve-month zodiac of animals. It is best described as a modern system built on traditional symbols rather than as an indigenous teaching.
How the method works
The year is divided into twelve periods on the solstices and equinoxes, and each is assigned a birth totem animal — otter, wolf, falcon, beaver, deer, woodpecker, salmon, brown bear, raven, snake, elk, snow goose. Each totem carries a described temperament and comes with a set of associations: a plant, a mineral, a colour and a complementary animal. Above the totems sit two further layers. The four elemental clans — frog for water, turtle for earth, hawk for fire, butterfly for air — group the totems by element and are read as the underlying disposition. The four spirit keepers hold the directions, each with a season and a lesson attached, and the direction of your birth position names which keeper stands over it. The reading is of how totem, clan and direction combine.
