Qimen Dunjia (奇門遁甲 — Hidden Gates of the Wonderful Mechanism) is one of the three great classical Chinese divination systems, developed over 2,000 years ago. The system is based on Nine Stars, Eight Gates and Eight Shen forces arranged in a nine-palace grid. The chart is calculated for the exact moment of the reading according to the solar calendar. Where it comes from
Qimen Dunjia is one of the three classical Chinese arts known as the San Shi, alongside Da Liu Ren and Tai Yi. Traditionally it was a military and strategic art, used for choosing the moment and the direction of an action, and its use was restricted — the legend attaches it to Zhuge Liang and to the campaigns of the Three Kingdoms. It is the most structurally complex of Chinese divinatory systems.
How the method works
The chart is a grid of nine palaces laid out on the compass directions, and three sets of symbols are placed into it: the Nine Stars, the Eight Gates and the Eight Shen, each with its own character. The arrangement depends on the exact moment — the solar term, the day and the two-hour period — which is why Qimen is cast for the time of the question rather than for the birth, and why two questions asked hours apart get different charts. The reading is positional: what matters is which gate and which star occupy the palace corresponding to the direction or the person the question concerns. Traditional use is as much about direction and timing as about outcome — where to go, which way to face, when to move. A destiny palace is also derived from birth data and read as a fixed personal point on the chart.
