Nine Star Ki is an ancient Japanese system combining the Chinese lunar calendar, I Ching and five elements into a unique map of personality and destiny. Your primary Ki number (1–9) determines your essential nature and life theme, while the secondary Ki number describes your social style and group behavior. Both numbers are calculated from date of birth using the solar lunar calendar with solar term boundaries. Where it comes from
Nine Star Ki is the Japanese form of a Chinese system, kyusei, built on the nine-square magic grid of the Luo Shu and the five elements. It came into Japan with Chinese calendrical astrology and was reorganised there into a compact system of nine numbers that is still used in Japan for compatibility, for choosing directions of travel and for timing, and it reached the West through macrobiotic teaching in the twentieth century.
How the method works
The principal number comes from the year of birth, counted on the solar calendar — which matters, because the year turns at the start of February, not on the first of January. Anyone born in January or early February belongs to the previous Ki year, and this is the single most common error in the system. The number is one of nine, each tied to an element and a trigram: one to water, two five and eight to earth, three and four to wood, six and seven to metal, nine to fire. A second number is calculated from the month of birth and describes the social manner — how the person appears and behaves in a group, which is often quite unlike the principal number. Compatibility and timing are then read from the productive and controlling cycles of the five elements, and each number also has favourable and unfavourable compass directions for a given year.

- The previous one. The Ki year begins around 4 February, so a birth before that belongs to the year before by this reckoning.
- Why do my two numbers describe different people?
- That is expected. The principal number is read as the underlying nature and the secondary as the social manner, and the system does not assume they match.
- Is this the same as Chinese zodiac animals?
- No. The animals come from the twelve-year branch cycle; Nine Star Ki runs on a nine-year cycle with the five elements and the Luo Shu grid. Different systems, different calendars.
