Ba Zi (八字) — Eight Characters — is the classical Chinese astrological system analyzing four destiny pillars: year, month, day and hour. Each pillar consists of a Heavenly Stem and Earthly Branch that together reveal the balance of five elements (wood, fire, earth, metal, water) in your chart. The Day Master (the heavenly stem of the day pillar) is your astrological essence. The analysis reveals character, talents, challenges, interpersonal dynamics and favorable life periods.

Where it comes from

Ba Zi means eight characters. The system reached its mature form in the Tang and Song dynasties, with Xu Ziping in the tenth century usually credited for the method still used, which is why it is also called Ziping astrology. It is built on the sexagenary cycle — ten Heavenly Stems paired with twelve Earthly Branches, producing sixty combinations — a counting system attested on Shang dynasty oracle bones more than three thousand years ago.

How the method works

Four pillars are calculated from the year, month, day and hour of birth, each pillar consisting of one Heavenly Stem and one Earthly Branch — eight characters in total. Every stem and branch carries one of the five elements: wood, fire, earth, metal, water. The day stem represents the person, and the whole reading proceeds from how the other seven characters support or drain it. The elements interact through two cycles, generating and controlling, and the analysis identifies which element the chart needs, called the useful god, and which is in excess.

What a reading covers

A reading gives the four pillars with their stems and branches, the element balance, the day master and its strength, the useful element, and the luck pillars — ten-year periods that modify the chart as life progresses.

Common questions

Do I need my birth hour?: The hour pillar is one of the four, so without it a quarter of the chart is missing. Readings are done with three pillars but the hour governs much of what concerns the later part of life and children.
Is it the same as the Chinese zodiac animal?: The animal is only the branch of the year pillar — one of eight characters. Reading a person from it alone is like reading a natal chart from the sun sign.
When does the Ba Zi year begin?: At the solar term Li Chun, around 4 February, not at Chinese New Year. This is a frequent source of error for people born in late January and early February.
