Where it comes from
The dasamsha is the divisional chart of the tenth, one of the sixteen vargas described in the Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra, and it is assigned to one subject only: profession, authority and public standing. Indian practice treats the tenth house of the birth chart as the question and the D10 as the detailed answer, which is why a career judgement made from the birth chart alone is considered preliminary.
How the method works
Each sign is divided into ten parts of three degrees and each part maps to a sign by the rule given in the classical text, producing a complete second chart. Its Ascendant describes the professional character — how a person operates at work, which is often unlike how they operate elsewhere. Its tenth house and the lord of that house describe what the career arrives at. Two chart-wide significators are read alongside: the Atmakaraka, the planet at the highest degree in the chart, taken as the soul's governor, and the Amatyakaraka, the planet at the second highest, taken as the career and counsel planet — and the position of the Amatyakaraka in the D10 is one of the tradition's more specific statements about the line of work. A planet weak in the birth chart but strong in the D10 is read as capacity that shows in professional life even if it does not show elsewhere.

- It describes the shape of professional capacity and the conditions under which it works best, not a job title. The tradition reads the line of work from the significators and the tenth lord, which narrows the field rather than naming a post.
- Does it replace the birth chart for career?
- No. It is read against it. The birth chart states the promise, the D10 states how much of it is actually supported.
