Secondary progressions (day-for-a-year method) are the most important astrological tool for tracking inner development and life phases. The principle is simple: each day after birth corresponds to one year of life. So the 30th day after birth describes your 30th year. Progressed positions of the Sun, Moon, Mercury, Venus, Mars, Ascendant and MC are calculated, detecting all sign changes throughout life (especially significant for Sun and Moon) and finds key aspects of progressed planets to natal ones. A progressed Sun in a new sign changes the entire approach to life, while the progressed Moon in a new sign shifts emotional focus every 2–3 years.
Where it comes from
Secondary progressions rest on a symbolic equation found in Ptolemy and formalised in the seventeenth century: one day of ephemeris motion after birth stands for one year of life. It is not a physical claim and no mechanism is proposed for it. It survived because it produces a slowly moving second chart that tracks the inner side of a life in a way transits, which come from outside, do not.
How the method works
To see a chart for your thirtieth year, the positions for the thirtieth day after your birth are taken. Because that is real ephemeris motion, the bodies move at their real speeds scaled down: the progressed Sun advances about a degree a year and so changes sign roughly every thirty years; the progressed Moon covers the whole zodiac in twenty-seven or twenty-eight years and changes sign every two and a half. The outer planets barely move at all, which is why progressions are read mainly from the Sun, Moon, Mercury, Venus, Mars and the angles. The two events that carry most weight are a sign change, especially of the Sun or Moon, and an aspect formed between a progressed planet and a natal one.

Common questions
- How is this different from transits?
- Transits are where the planets actually are now and are read as events arriving from outside. Progressions are a symbolic unfolding of the birth chart itself and are read as development from within. They are used together.
- Do I need an exact birth time?
- For the Sun, Moon and planets, an approximate time is workable. The progressed Ascendant and Midheaven depend directly on the birth time and are unusable without a reliable one.
- Why does my progressed Sun sign feel stronger than my birth sign?
- That is the usual report after a sign change, and the technique predicts it: the progressed Sun is read as the current emphasis while the natal Sun stays the foundation. Neither replaces the other.
