Where it comes from
Reading Venus and Mars for attraction is old — the two have carried desire and pursuit since Hellenistic astrology, and synastry has always weighted them heavily. Isolating them into a technique of their own is modern, and the reason is practical: a full synastry produces dozens of aspects across two charts and the question of chemistry gets buried in it. Cutting to four cross-aspects gives a narrow answer to a narrow question.
How the method works
Venus is taken as how a person loves and what they are drawn to; Mars as how they want and how they go after it. Four contacts are then measured. Venus of A to Mars of B, and Mars of A to Venus of B — these are the two directions of attraction and they are not symmetrical, which is why one person often feels the pull more strongly than the other. Venus to Venus shows whether the two styles of affection recognise each other. Mars to Mars shows whether the two drives cooperate or grind. Conjunctions and trines are read as ease, squares and oppositions as friction that is not the same thing as absence — a square between Venus and Mars is traditionally one of the strongest attraction signatures there is, and one of the least comfortable.

Common questions
- Do we need birth times?
- Not strictly. Venus and Mars move slowly enough that the date usually fixes the sign and degree. Times are needed only for the house placements.
- Does a low score mean it will not work?
- It means the chemistry signature is weak in these four contacts, which is a narrow claim. Long relationships are read from Sun, Moon, Saturn and the angles as much as from Venus and Mars.
- Does it work for same-sex couples?
- Yes. Both planets are read in both charts regardless of gender; the older habit of assigning Venus to the woman and Mars to the man is not part of the method.
